“Without Laila, my assistance dog, I’d be in care.”

Following life-changing injuries from a car accident, Andy has reclaimed his independence thanks to Canine Partners

For more than 30 years, Andy Newton (57) from Staffordshire, lived with the lasting effects of a spinal cord injury sustained in a car accident. Everyday tasks like getting dressed, leaving the house and doing the washing left him exhausted, and he faced a future relying on full-time carers.

Everything changed in 2024 when Andy was partnered with Laila, a black Labrador cross Golden Retriever trained by Loughborough-based charity Canine Partners. Since then, his physical and mental health has improved dramatically, and his relationships with family are stronger than ever.

Andy said: “I used to be stuck at home and miserable, but Laila has given me my life back. She makes everyday life easier and gives me the confidence to leave the house and see people. I visit my parents every day now instead of once a week and they hardly recognise me. I feel like a completely new person and cannot imagine life without her – she is my best friend.”

Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Canine Partners trains assistance dogs to help adults with physical disabilities gain independence and confidence. From opening doors and loading washing machines to providing companionship, each dog transforms the lives of the people they support.

Chrissie Hyland, Laila’s trainer and Assistance Dog Training Team Leader, said: “Andy has gone from withdrawing from life to fully embracing it. Laila has not only improved his daily life but has helped protect his independence long term.”

Canine Partners’ Christmas Carol Concert

Andrew, accompanied by Laila, will share his story at Canine Partners’ Christmas Carol Concert at All Saints Church, Loughborough, on Sunday 7 December at 3pm. Guests can enjoy festive carols, live demonstrations of the dogs’ life-changing skills, and hear firsthand how these amazing dogs transform lives.

Santa Paws

For dog lovers, Canine Partners is also hosting Santa Paws on Saturday 13 December at its National Training Centre in Loughborough, where dogs can meet Father Christmas and have a photo in his grotto. Families can also enjoy Breakfast with Santa earlier in the day, making it a festive day out for the whole family.

Rebecca Middleton, Community Fundraising Officer, said: “We’re excited to welcome families and their dogs to our events with Santa. Every ticket sold helps us continue our life-changing work, giving people like Andy the gift of independence.”
